FII ~ Welsh Government Failing to End the ‘Cruel Abuse’ of Autistic Parents and Autistic Children
Mark Isherwood North Wales MS and Chair of both the Cross-Party Autism Group and the Cross-Party Group on Disability, has endorsed the comments of one of his Flintshire constituent’s – that “neurodivergent people are being actively targeted with ‘the usual allegations’ of Fabricated or Induced Illness (FII)”.
Questioning the Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice over support for families raising disabled children at a meeting of the Welsh Parliament on 21st May 2025 Mr Isherwood asked “when, if ever, will the Welsh Government therefore take action to stop this cruel abuse” – and noted the disproportionate number of disabled parents facing accusations of FII. In so doing Mr Isherwood drew attention to a consultation (at which he attended) undertaken by St George’s House, Windsor Castle, on the topic of FII. The formal report of the consultation concluded that (among much else) ‘False allegations of FII are a constant risk to the public, to families and especially to vulnerable children who are consistently failed by aggressive safeguarding responses that ignore evidence and empathy’.
